Since the end of World War II, many Western armed forces have sought to belong to the \u201chigh-technology club.\u201d This approach has driven the development of advanced weapons systems, assets, and ammunition designed to maintain technological superiority over potential adversaries. The underlying belief is that superior technology provides a decisive advantage on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While this assumption may hold true in short-duration expeditionary operations, recent history has shown its limitations in prolonged conflicts. Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Mali, and more recently Iran, all illustrate\u2014with full respect to the soldiers and civilians who sacrificed their lives\u2014that technological superiority alone does not guarantee strategic success. Moreover, membership in the \u201chigh-technology club\u201d comes with two major drawbacks: extremely high costs and limited production volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The war in Ukraine has further highlighted the growing role of UAVs on the battlefield. The threat now ranges from long-range strike drones to inexpensive FPV drones. Countermeasures are equally diverse, yet the scale of UAV production in Russia, Ukraine, and Iran has reached levels that make purely high-technology responses increasingly unaffordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite this reality, many armed forces and defense industries continue to react with the same reflex: prioritizing sophisticated solutions without sufficient consideration for cost efficiency. The French Army recently highlighted the successful interception of a Shahed UAV by a Tiger attack helicopter. Similarly, the Belgian Air Force tested the use of \u201clow-cost\u201d rockets launched from an F-16 against comparable drones. However, such approaches raise an essential question: how sustainable are these solutions when facing hundreds or even thousands of UAVs per day?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is no simple answer to this challenge. Technological developments will continue, but the first and most necessary step is a shift in mindset. Future solutions must balance effectiveness with affordability, prioritize scalability, and enable large-scale production rather than relying solely on technological sophistication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
